Print | PDFIf you’re looking for a guide to how to be valuable in a world where intelligent systems are changing work, you’ll find answers in the new award-winning book co-authored by Kyle Murray, Dean of the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, and Ibrahim Gedeon, former chief technology officer at Telus.
Launching in North American on March 10, 2026 from Rotman-University of Toronto Press Publishing, their book, Automata: The Power of AI Integrated with Advanced Robotics, helps readers understand how artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced robotics are quickly changing the kinds of work that humans do – and what people and organizations can do to adapt.
“Once limited to routine tasks, intelligent machines are now performing activities that were long considered uniquely human,” said Murray. “Our book explains how automation is likely to reshape jobs, organizations, and daily life but it also highlights practical ways that individuals and organizations can prepare for this change.”
The book has already earned attention as the 2025 Tech Book of the Year, an honour given to the book in December by the Telecom Review Group. This award recognizes exceptional and influential publications that offer meaningful insights to the telecommunications and information and communication technology industry.
“We wrote Automata to help serve as a guide for anyone looking to thrive rather than just survive the changes to business occurring as a result of integrated intelligence tools into the workplace, like generative AI,” said Murray. “Human work, society, and daily life are being redefined every day by the rise of machine intelligence. It’s up to us to decide how to respond and this book offers some suggestions for success.”
The book draws on leadership and experience from Murray’s expertise in innovation and behaviour change in business and society. It builds on his research published over the past 25 years in psychology, computing science, marketing, and information systems on the impact of technology on human decision making.
Co-author Gedeon is one of the telecommunications industry’s most respected executives widely known as a global authority on technology application and transformation. He held the role of chief technology officer at Telus for more than two decades and currently serves as executive director of Guardian Safety Net. He’s received numerous awards for his work including being named to the Global Telecoms Business magazine’s “Power 100” list four times.
“Business leaders today face unprecedented complexity,” said Murray. “This book is about helping leaders make thoughtful decisions that balance innovation, responsibility, and long-term impact.”
The publication reflects the Lazaridis School’s commitment to advancing research that informs real-world business practice. The book will be celebrated at several launch events this year and is featured in an upcoming Coffee with Kyle podcast. More information about the book is available at Rotman-UTP Publishing.
