Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Learn More. On-Demand.

Hear from current students in the Faculty of Arts about their favourite courses and professors, memorable experiences, and learn more about your program through our on-demand content.

Become a Truly Multilingual Graduate

Laurier’s Bachelor of Arts in Languages is the first of its kind in Canada. You’ll have the opportunity to study two languages in depth: French and Spanish. Then you'll add to your thorough knowledge of French and Spanish by acquiring basic, working knowledge of a third language of your choice (Arabic, German or Italian). You're also required to take courses in linguistics or cultural perspectives (European and Mediterranean) to round out your education.

If you have prior language experience and are interested in taking French and Spanish upper-level courses, be sure to consult with the Languages and Literatures department

Study Abroad and Hone Your Skills

Our professors use innovative teaching methods and creative projects. You are encouraged to study abroad in your third year, while completing courses towards your degree. Studying languages will open the door to the world and to endless opportunities.

You'll gain invaluable communication skills and a heightened awareness of cultural connections, while enhancing your ability to think critically about the world around you. This is further strengthened if you choose to go on an international exchange in third or fourth year.

Take Engaging Courses

As you progress into the program, you will be able to chose from a wide variety of courses on topics such as:

  • language, grammar and phonetics
  • advanced language and stylistics
  • French, French-Canadian and Francophone cultures
  • literature and society
  • cinema and visual culture
  • translation

You can also participate in hands-on research in the Linguistics Lab.

"I loved that the classes were smaller and that the professors knew my name. [...] Studying three languages... you can't beat it! The flexibility in course choices and the amazing professors make this program outstanding."

– Andrea Hadland (BA '16)
