Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

By the end of this decade, more people will live in cities and towns than at any point in human civilization. The growth of cities around the world and here in Canada bring with it exciting prospects, but also particular challenges. Our future leaders will need a clear appreciation of these complex challenges and the opportunities they create for innovation.

CityStudio is an initiative that enables our students to earn credit as they make positive contributions to the city in which they are living. Drawing on the CityStudio model developed in Vancouver, CityStudio Waterloo brings together the experience of our communities, the expertise of our municipal professionals and the acumen and enthusiasm of our students into a partnership that promises unique insights and potential for action.

At the heart of our CityStudio initiative is the course SE330: Social Innovation in the City. Through this course, you will learn the latest frameworks and techniques that are being used to problem solve social and community challenges all over the world, develop your research and consultation skills as well as design a solution to a local challenge. At the end of the course, students present their work at City Hall. The most promising ideas that emerge from this course are then pursued through student summer internships and other opportunities.

Through CityStudio, our students will not only make a positive contribution to their communities but also transform their understanding of and engagement with the people and professionals who live in and work in this incredible place.
