Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Our Laurier leaders inspire the lives of leadership and purpose at Laurier. These leaders are comprised of our employees who wish to share their experiences working at Laurier, what inspires them and what being a part of the Laurier community means to them.

Dave Shorey is the associate director of Residence Education.

Sharing His Inspiration

What Does Inspiring Lives of Leadership and Purpose Mean to You?

It means focussing my time and in turn our team’s time on being developmental coaches and learning partners to those we serve. Staff in Student Affairs contribute to a student’s developmental journey, especially when working with first-year students who live in residence and with the student staff who provide front-line support. It is lightening in a bottle! The transition to life at Laurier presents rich learning opportunities, and we have the responsibility to create space for students (and staff) to reflect deeply on their values, their ability to nurture mature relationships, and to develop the skills necessary for a self-authored life.

What Inspires You?

I have the opportunity to work alongside people who are driven, dedicated, generous, positive, and solutions-oriented every single day. Whether collaborating with a colleague on campus or seeing a student staff member bring their entire self to their role, I can’t help but want to engage with those that are committed to strengthening the Laurier community.

I Lead at Laurier By…

Showing up each day with the commitment to strengthen our community, and by collaborating with students and colleagues who share the same desire. I also bring apple fritters into our offices from time to time.

I Chose a Career at Laurier Because…

Someone took a chance on me after completing my undergraduate degree that put me on a personal and professional path that has been life changing. I want to provide meaningful employment opportunities for student and professional staff that creates possible futures they can reflect on in a few years in the same way.

Being Part of the Laurier Community Means…

Taking responsibility for the role I play in shaping our living-learning environment, and promoting the values that Laurier espouses. I am a proud 2x graduate (BA ’06, MEd ’14) that is deeply invested in Laurier being a healthy, supportive community where people find connection and support one another.
