I am fortunate to have a multi-faceted career as an active performer on the classical guitar and ambassador of new music, as well as a performance coach and educator. I have helped advanced musicians manage their experience of music performance anxiety, or stage fright, in private coachings, and have given guest lectures on this topic in universities and festivals across Canada. I was recently appointed as a guitar instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University's Faculty of Music as of September 2020.
As a performer, I’ve given concerts in Austria, Italy, Japan, and various locations across Canada, the United States, and have performed as a soloist and chamber musician at the Alte Schmiede Kunstverein, Vienna, Ottawa Chamberfest, Toronto New Music Concerts, Domaine Forget, Quebec, INNERChamber music festival, the 21C Festival at Koerner Hall, and the Livorno Music Festival, Italy.
I recently released my debut album of virtuosic solo guitar works by composers based in Canada, titled Inspirations: New Music for Solo Guitar in January 2022, which was featured as "Record of the Week" on CBC Radio's In Concert On Demand with Paolo Pietropaolo in March of that year. Three of the works on the album were world-premiere recordings, and the project was funded by the Ontario Arts Council.
Some of my favourite experiences include premiering Raphael Weinroth-Browne's Catharsis for solo guitar, and performing in Vienna, Austria at the Alte Schmiede Kunstverein, where I premiered several new works for guitar and marimba with my wife Naoko Tsujita in 2018. Our duo has premiered dozens of new works for this instrumentation from composers all over the world.
My students have won top prizes in local and provincial music competitions and have entered undergraduate and graduate guitar programs across Canada. Some of the teachers I've worked with in the past have included Dr. Jeffrey McFadden, Patrick Roux, Bruce Holzman, Lorenzo Micheli, and Denis Azabagic. I hold a Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Ottawa, and will complete my Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Toronto in summer 2022.
My current research compares strategies from the classical guitar literature and the cognitive-behavioural psychology literature for managing music performance anxiety in guitarists, a project for which I received the University of Toronto New College Senior doctoral fellowship in 2021-2022. I give lectures frequently across Canada on music performance anxiety, and recently gave lectures at McGill University, Mount Royal University, University of Toronto, among others.
Currently, I am preparing to record several new works for guitar and marimba in my next album, return to performing more in public as the pandemic subsides, and bring my research on music performance anxiety to more diverse audiences.
I first joined Laurier during September 2020, where I became one of the youngest instructors at the Faculty of Music at the age of 28. I was deeply impressed by the level of camaraderie among the faculty and students, who seem to truly support each other and celebrate each other’s successes. Laurier is a very special school which encourages creativity and respect for student’s goals and objectives. I love helping students grow and evolve throughout the year, and to become more self-aware, confident, and musical as the year progresses. I am very honoured to be the classical guitar instructor here at the Faculty of Music.
