Join us at Laurier

Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

Learning French at Laurier

Laurier’s French program opens innumerable doors. In a bilingual country that requires people with strong analytical and communicative skills in both French and English, a French degree from Laurier prepares you for life after graduation.

The opportunities are endless when you’re a French student at Laurier. You’ll study a wide range of subjects, including:

  • The diverse cultures of the French-speaking world;
  • French and francophone literature, film, music and animation;
  • Advanced writing in French;
  • French-English translation;
  • French grammar (beginner, intermediate and advanced level); and
  • The reflection and practice of teaching in French.

Practice Makes Perfect

There's no better way to learn a language than to be surrounded by it. As a French student at Laurier, you are encouraged to take part in an exchange program at a French-speaking university, participate in Explore programs, or apply for summer jobs in Francophone countries (Laurier's partners include AIESEC Global Talent and Télévision Française de l’Ontario).

We also offer plenty of in-class experiences to flex your language muscles in practical applications, such as:

  • Singing in French and making your own playlist (FR225);
  • Creative writing (FR470);
  • Blog writing (FR240);
  • Making video clips (FR250);
  • Creating mini magazines (FR251);
  • Making a documentary (FR240);
  • A placement in a French school (FR300); and
  • Community service with a French organization (FR434).

"The teachers are phenomenal and the small class sizes allowed me to get to know a lot of people in the program from various years, which improved the already amazing sense of community around campus."

– Meaghan Kay (BA '17)
