It’s ok to be who you are, and no one has the right to cause anyone harm because of their gender, gender expression or perceived gender.
From Nov. 25 through Dec. 10, Laurier will host virtual programming in support of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. Violence against women and girls is an all-too-common form of gender-based violence, but violence also has a disproportionate impact on LGBTQ2S+ and gender non-binary people.
“The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence is a call to action across Laurier’s campuses to stand up, speak out, and fight against an issue that impacts our whole community,” says Sarah Scanlon, sexual violence response coordinator at Wilfrid Laurier University. “We know how important it is to support each other, especially during COVID-19. Home isn’t a safe place for everyone and the decrease in control over our lives can activate trauma. People impacted by gender-based violence deserve safety, solidarity, and support.”
The online events are organized by Laurier’s Gendered and Sexual Violence Prevention and Support team and are open to all faculty, staff and students at no charge. Registration is required for some events.
Consent is Not Cancelled is a six-part speaker series featuring leading experts who discuss approaches to address and prevent sexual violence.
On Nov. 24 from noon to 1:30 p.m., film producer and abolitionist-feminist organizer Richie Reseda joins Laurier’s Consent Is Not Cancelled series to discuss alternatives to toxic forms of masculinity such as violence, sex and ownership. Join Reseda on Zoom to learn about the endless possibilities for non-toxic forms of masculinity. Registration for this event is required.
On Nov. 25, show your commitment to ending #GenderBasedViolence. Take a picture of yourself wearing purple, share a message of support, and post it to social media. Include the hashtag #16DaysofActivism and tag @consentisgolden.
Tune into Laurier’s Instagram account on Nov. 25 and Dec. 4 for takeovers hosted by Laurier's Gendered and Sexual Violence Prevention and Support team. Takeovers will discuss activism against gender-based and sexual violence and how to support survivors.
A variety of virtual workshops and other online resources will take place between Nov. 25 and Dec. 14, including:
Virtual Lecture: “What Does Your Heart Need to Hear? Attachment-Focused Healing for Survivors of Trauma” with Sunna Murphy from Sanctuary Counselling, Dec. 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. on Zoom. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to register.
