Becoming a Golden Hawk means more than just cheering on our (really good) varsity teams – it means being a student who cares about your community, who works hard in the classroom, and who takes advantage of all the learning opportunities that can happen outside the classroom, too.

LAUNCH is an accelerated, problem-based camp for children in grades 4-8 as of September 2018. LAUNCH is designed for those students who are looking for more of a challenge to reach their full potential — the pace is much faster, the expectations for self-direction are much higher and the concepts are more advanced. Our programs are led by certified teachers and are carefully developed to be high quality learning experiences.

Our campers:

  • Are working more than three grade levels above his/her grade (documentation* required).
  • Are self-directed learners.
  • Have deep knowledge in several different topics.
  • Are able to consider a problem situation from many diverse perspectives.

Twice-exceptional learners are also welcome to apply. We welcome children from the homeschool community.

*Documentation consists of a psychoeducational assessment, an IPRC recommendation for gifted services or the completion of the supplemental application survey.

The Power of Progress

By Kevin Watt

Sometimes innovations come slowly, like the difference between the iPhone 8 and X ("Another camera! Slightly faster!"), or a new disposable razor blade ("Now 10 blades for an even smoother shave!"). However, the true gamechangers bring with them permanent shifts to the landscape of our world. How do these innovations change us and our society?

The theme of this session’s LAUNCH camp is "The Power of Progress." Through a series of researched Socratic seminars, campers will investigate the impact of innovations in the automotive industry, the environment, interpersonal communication and the home and lifestyle sector.

Campers will investigate these concepts and determine their effects on our society. They will imagine innovations yet to come in these areas and plan, design and present new innovations related to these topics.

Join us in looking at the history of innovation and finding out where the power of progress may lead!

Registration

Eligibility Process

If you believe your child would be a good fit for LAUNCH, submit at least one of the following documents to launch@wlu.ca:

If you have any questions regarding application and/or eligibility, email launch@wlu.ca.

Registration Process

Note: Winter 2019 will open on Nov. 12, 2018.

If your child has attended LAUNCH before, or if you have applied as outlined above and have been accepted as eligible, proceed with the two-part online registration process:

  1. Pay via credit card through the Course Store.
    • Your child's space will be confirmed immediately once payment is received. If you prefer to pay by cash or cheque, you will need to drop it off or mail it to us.
    • Note: Your camper's registration is not confirmed or held until payment is received and some camps do fill up quickly.
  2. Complete the online camper information form.
    • Filling out this form without completing step one does not hold a spot for your camper.

The camp is limited to the first 15 qualified campers who apply. We place a lower limit on the size of a LAUNCH camp because each camper may be thinking on a wavelength unique to him/her. This requires the teacher to prepare multiple different lessons each day to allow students to have an individualized experience. Our limited camp size ensures the experience is fulfilling for everyone. Please see LAUNCH Policies and Conditions for more information.
