Land Acknowledgement

Wilfrid Laurier University is located on the Haldimand Tract, traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinabe and Haudenosaunee peoples. This land is part of the Dish With One Spoon Treaty between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabe peoples and symbolizes the agreement to share, protect resources and not engage in conflict. 2.5-hours from 18 First Nations communities, including the Six Nations of the Grand River, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Waterloo, Brantford, Kitchener and Milton also have large urban Indigenous populations. There are 12 Métis councils within a three-hour radius. Laurier recognizes the unique heritages of Indigenous Peoples and supports their right to preserve and express their distinctive Indigenous cultures, histories and knowledge through academic programming, research, teaching and co-curricular activities. Laurier honours Indigenous knowledge through diverse ongoing initiatives, programs, funding, events and positions, including the university’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives, its Indigenous Student Centres, its Centre for Indigegogy, the Indigenous Knowledge Fund, annual Indigenist Research Symposium, Indigenous Studies Program, Visiting Elders program and Indigenous curriculum supports.

Position Description

Wilfrid Laurier University is pleased to announce the commencement of its Inclusive Excellence initiative to hire at least six Indigenous scholars into new full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty positions. We are truly passionate about this initiative and excited to attract more high-calibre, diverse talent to Laurier. As a multi-campus, multi-community university, Laurier is known for offering unique programs that make each campus its own, while retaining the essence of Laurier's strong community culture that binds us together. As one of a series of policy changes and initiatives to address systemic racism outlined in Laurier’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Indigeneity Action Plan, aimed at addressing systemic racism, the available positions align with the inclusive community and Indigeneity themes as part of the university’s broader efforts to advance strategic academic and research goals and enhance academic excellence and student experience.

The new Indigenous scholars will have the opportunity to join and benefit from the support of the Indigenous Faculty Council. Successful candidates will be part of a growing number of Indigenous faculty across Laurier’s campuses and will be supported in their careers by their home departments, faculties, and central administration. Indigenous scholars joining Laurier through this Inclusive Excellence cohort program will be warmly welcomed by departments and colleagues that are committed to EDI and have in place a supportive onboarding and retention strategy.

The Faculty of Arts is seeking a scholar whose work engages with material and visual cultures across a single or a wide range of media to join the Departments of Archeology and Heritage Studies and Religion and Culture and a scholar whose research deals with environmental media studies and decolonial media studies to join the Department of Communication Studies.

Faculty of Music

The Faculty of Music is seeking a musician/teacher (broadly defined as performer, composer, conductor and/or scholar) to join the Community Music program with expertise in Indigenous music that intersects with community health and wellness. This position would be affiliated with Community Music at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with strong ties to Music Therapy at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and potential for curricular connections across other areas of the Faculty of Music, the university and in the community. Teaching will be based on the candidate’s expertise and could include existing or new coursework. The candidate’s work will help develop and expand the curriculum at the Faculty of Music, diversify repertoire in the school, and support the school’s interest in growth and innovation.

Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science is seeking a scholar to be cross-appointed to the departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Geography and Environmental Studies who has NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR eligible research interests in contaminants or the impacts of climate change from a chemistry/biochemistry perspective relevant to northern communities. The faculty is also seeking a scholar to join the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education in the sociocultural areas of physical activity. This scholar will have the opportunity to work closely with the Sun Life Financial Centre for Physically Active Communities as well as contribute to an understanding of societal factors influencing the uptake of physical activity behaviours.

Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work

The Faculty of Social Work is seeking a scholar to help strengthen, and grow within, the BSW program as well as a scholar in the Indigenous Field of Study to help build a research centre that attends to the many social issues facing Indigenous people across Canada.

Position Profiles

Successful candidates will be emerging or respected scholars and teachers in all career stages, including those who are suitable for appointment at the rank of lecturer, as well as assistant, associate and full professor. Outstanding candidates without a PhD will be considered if they are a recognized Indigenous knowledge-holder, hold connection to Indigenous communities, employ Indigenous research and teaching methodologies, and have notable scholarly outputs recognized by other Indigenous scholars. Successful candidates’ scholarships should support and enhance at least one area of priority listed above. Within higher education in Canada, traditional or conventional academic pathways in research and teaching can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty positions. Laurier encourages applications from those whose scholarship and teaching may not fit traditional academic conventions. Laurier is particularly interested in welcoming Indigenous Scholars whose contributions to Indigenous thought and philosophy will enhance the academic standing and culture of the university as it continues to evolve rapidly into a more research-intensive, comprehensive, university.

Candidates who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) are encouraged to apply by including the following in their application. Please note that additional materials may be requested through the review process as required by the home department.

  • a letter of intent including the candidate’s research and teaching interest and where this best aligns with Laurier’s areas of priority;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a statement on teaching philosophy, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as course syllabus/description, a peer teaching review and student/participant feedback);
  • a sample publication, scholarly output or writing sample; and
  • the names and contact information of three referees.

Laurier will be taking steps to confirm candidates' ‘Indigenous identity’ as part of the recruitment and selection process. The process used to confirm identity has been developed in consultation with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
