English Proficiency

2014

Students attending Laurier must have excellent facility in the English language in order to fully understand and benefit from university instruction presented in English

Please Note: Students whose first language is not English are required, and will be requested, to submit acceptable evidence of their English proficiency to the Undergraduate Admissions Office. This may be an official transcript satisfactorily demonstrating a minimum of 3 years in an institution that teaches in the English language, or a successful English-Proficiency test score.

ESL studies within the three years of academic study will not be included, as the ESL periods are not considered when looking at three years of full-time studies in an English-instructed institution.

Applicants must make their own arrangements to write the test and have the results forwarded directly to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

Applicants who have studied successfully in an English instructional educational system on a full-time basis for a minimum of 3 years and who can present acceptable grades in English and other Humanities/Social Science courses from their senior secondary year may not be required to submit an English proficiency test score. Applicants who satisfy the above requirements and wish exemption must provide the Admissions Office with a letter detailing the reasons for their appeal and include a letter of recommendation from their Secondary School principal or designate. The appropriate Admissions committee assesses the request for exemption of this requirement.

Documentation requesting exemption should be mailed to:
Undergraduate Admissions Office,
Wilfrid Laurier University
75 University Avenue West
Waterloo, ON  N2L 3C5

Normally the evidence of English proficiency is an acceptable score on one of the following tests.  The only exception to our minimum English proficiency test score requirement applies to the BBA/Math (UW) and BBA/BCS (UW) programs.

Students who do not meet Laurier's English language requirements may choose to pursue an intensive ESL program offered by one of our EDUCATION PARTNERS or Laurier English & Academic Foundation (LEAF) program.  Laurier will provide conditional Offers of Admission for September entry to academically qualified students who are completing an English Language Certificate Program at one of our ESL partners or Laurier's LEAF... for specific details and requirements view English Language Study Programs and Admission Options
