Alumni Newsletter: Spring 2010

Dr. Colleen Willard-Holt

Message from the Dean:

Greetings to everyone! I hope you are enjoying the spring weather at long last. There are a few items of interest to convey. First, Dr. Dawn Buzza and I traveled to Toronto to present our submission to the Ontario College of Teachers in order to have the conditions on our accreditation removed. The conditions were imposed on the Junior/Intermediate program because it was new and there were no syllabi or instructors hired at the time it was initially approved; this is routine procedure for them. The accreditation committee was very complimentary to the evidence we provided and our conditions were in fact removed. We are now fully accredited for both Primary/Junior and Junior/Intermediate programs!

The second piece of news relates to the LEAP program. Laurierís Enriched Academic Program, intended for gifted and highly able children in grades 1-8, is expanding! We had a total of 37 campers last summer in courses such as Ultimate Survivor, Super Science, Blast Off, Explore Nature, Pirates and Superheroes. We ran a Saturday camp in January and February for 55 campers, and this summerís program looks as if it will be even bigger. We still need volunteers to help out, so please pass the word. For more information, go to www. wlu.ca/education/leap .

Finally, under the leadership of Dr. Donna Kotsopoulos, we are preparing documentation for a graduate program. The program will be a Masterís of Education, Integrated Studies in Education, and will partner with various other masterís programs on campus to provide a set of electives matching studentsí interests. We are hoping that the program will begin in Summer, 2011.

Best wishes in your personal and professional life! Keep us updated on what you are doing!

Sincerely,

Colleen Willard-Holt, Ph.D.
