THE JAMES CLARK DRAMA PRIZE

Description:
At the discretion of the English Department Chair, this award will be given to an English student enrolled in either their second or third year of study.  The successful student will have demonstrated an interest in Drama, either through course work or participation in a dramatic production and will also have excellent academic standing in English course work.  This award will be given out yearly at the Faculty of Arts Awards Ceremony."


THE LENNARD FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOURS ENGLISH

THE MARGARET FULTON AWARD

Description:
Endowed award; established by Dr James Doyle (professor of English at WLU 1974-97) in honour of Dr Margaret Fulton, former professor of English at WLU (1967-74), dean of women at the University of British Columbia (1974-78), president of Mount St Vincent University (1978-86), author, public speaker, social activist, member of the Order of Canada and recipient of eleven honourary degrees; this award commemorates Dr Fulton's work in education and humanitarian causes and her ideal of a non-hierarchical society and culture where women and men work together; this award is also dedicated to the memory of Aileen Doyle (1917-2002) and Isabelle Doyle (1902-1980), teachers in Ontario elementary schools for over twenty-five years

Eligible Applicants:
Full-time undergraduate students in Year 2 or Year 3 Honours English or combined Honours English programs (full-time students in Year 3 General English who have been admitted into the honours program are eligible); demonstrated commitment to cultural or humanitarian activities through participation in student associations, campus or community cultural and political clubs/committees or volunteer programs; minimum cumulative GPA of 10.0 (A-); Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident (landed immigrant) or Protected Person; long-term resident of Ontario; proven financial need; a student may only be granted this award once

HUGH MACLACHLAN SCHOLARSHIP
DOLLAR VALUE:                     up to $700

Endowed scholarship; offered at the discretion of the Department of English and Film Studies

Eligible Applicants:
Students who are graduates of the Honours English program, or, in the case of Year 5 make-up students, the equivalent, who are proceeding to graduate studies in English.


GERALD A. NOONAN MEMORIAL BURSARY
DOLLAR VALUE:                     up to $3000

Description:
Endowed award; two awards are granted annually; established by Edna Staebler in recognition of Gerald Noonan, a dedicated faculty member of the Department of English from 1969 to 1995; Gerald Noonan had a passionate interest in Canadian literature, creative writing and a particular fascination for the culture and people of Waterloo-Wellington counties; his originality and humour were enjoyed by all who knew him; Dr. Noonan's editions of four books, many other scholarly publications, nearly sixty reviews and review articles, as well as his presentations at many conferences in Canada and abroad are typical of his work; his book on Homer Watson further enhanced his scholarly achievement; almost everyday of his life, he wrote a poem; this ursary is given by Edna Staebler in appreciation of Gerry's generous and thoughtful friendship of more than thirty years.

Eligible Applicants:
Full-time undergraduate students not in Year 1; majoring in English; strongly demonstrated interest in Canadian literature and creative writing; resident of Ontario; preference will be given to students residing in Waterloo-Wellington counties; high academic standing; proven financial need; in exceptional circumstances a Year 1 student will be considered.


THE BARBARA PARKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH
DOLLAR VALUE:                     up to $400
ELIGIBLE DISCIPLINE(S):    English

Description:
Endowed scholarship; established by Mr. Robert and Mrs. Shirley Parker in honour of their late daughter, Barbara Parker, a WLU English honours student, to recognize her love of English and Canadian literature; automatically granted to the student who achieves the highest mark in English 324 (Canadian Women's Writing) during the previous academic year.

Eligible Applicants:
Students who have completed English 324 (Canadian Women's Writing); continuing registration at Wilfrid Laurier University; Canadian citizen; financial need is not a consideration.


FLORA ROY SCHOLARSHIPS

Description:
Endowed scholarship; established by colleagues, alumni and friends of Flora Roy, professor emerita of English; three scholarships are granted annually to students with the highest GPAs entering Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4.

Eligible Applicants:
Full-time undergraduate students in Year 2, Year 3 or Year 4 of the Honours English program.


Jerry D. Young Bursary Fund
NOTE:  This bursary is granted as part of the general bursary program; you will be considered for this bursary when you apply for bursary assistance (Go to "Bursaries" ); there is no distinct application form for this bursary.
