Laurier students to compete in Everyday Creativity contest March 23

Mar 21/14

Students in the Wilfrid Laurier University chapter of AIESEC – the world’s largest student run organization focusing on developing globally-minded leaders – are one of four finalists in the McDonald McCafé and Campus Perks competition to promote Everyday Creativity in McDonalds’ McCafés.

The Laurier team will compete in the next round, presenting their idea “Global Village,” on Sunday, March 23 at the McDonalds McCafé at the corner of King and Columbia streets in Waterloo. All are welcome to attend.

Global Village came from an idea by AIESEC Laurier President Chungsoon Haw, fourth-year economics and financial management student at Laurier. After he was offered the opportunity to travel to India, he realized the importance of leaving his comfort zone and experiencing other cultures.

“I always thought I was open minded, but when I was offered the chance to go to India, I hesitated. I didn’t know what to expect,” said Haw. “However, after landing at the airport and being picked up by local AIESEC members there, I realized that there was absolutely nothing different between us. We have the same aspirations, the same values and the same concerns. Because of all these experiences, I realized the importance of leaving one’s comfort zone and experiencing cultures we never thought we’d experience.”

This experience inspired Haw and students involved in AIESEC to bring different world cultures to Waterloo Region. They selected five to seven countries and regions to bring to the King and Columbia McDonalds Café as part of The Global Village theme and will unveil these countries and regions at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 23.

AIESEC is the largest student-run organization in the world and focuses on developing youth into globally minded leaders of tomorrow by providing them with international internship opportunities. To go on an internship this summer, visit aiesec.ca or email Haw at chungsoon.haw@aiesec.net.
