Orientation week information for Laurier’s graduate students

Aug 30/13

Laurier welcomes all new and returning graduate students for the fall 2013 semester. From Sept. 3 to 5, Laurier will hold its annual Graduate and Professional Studies Symposium (GPSS) at the Waterloo campus.

GPSS provides a professional development and orientation experience for new and returning graduate students, as well as teaching and instructional assistants.

“GPSS provides an excellent opportunity for graduate students to prepare for their academic journeys through shared experiences, skills building and program preparation,” said Tamas Dobozy, associate dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The three-day program is designed to help students navigate their success at Laurier as they engage in opportunities to develop practical knowledge and skills transferrable to their academic and career development. It will also help them learn about and become part of the Laurier community, and build long-lasting relationships that extend beyond graduation. Examples of the orientation sessions include:

  • Building Research-Related Skills to Drive your Success
  • Effective Graduate Student-Supervisor Relationships
  • Getting from Here to There: The Career Planning Process
  • Active Reading: Moving Beyond Skimming and Highlighting

GPSS is a collaborative initiative of the Graduate Students’ Association, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, Teaching Support Services, Career Development Centre, and the Dean of Students (Waterloo).
