WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University has named Nick Coady as dean of the Faculty of Social Work and reappointed Joan Norris to a second term as dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS).

During her first term, Norris helped ensure approval of 10 new graduate programs and increased capacity in existing programs, resulting in a 30-per-cent increase in graduate enrolments. She also developed partnerships with the Graduate Students Association and various faculties at Laurier, created a strategic plan for the faculty, and has been active in provincial and national organizations that oversee graduate programming.

Her priorities for the second five-year term include developing a new strategic plan with the FGPS, the Graduate Faculty Council and faculty deans, focusing on integration opportunities, and enhancing the graduate student and postdoctoral fellow experience.

“Dr. Norris is a strong advocate for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and graduate programs at Laurier,” said Deborah MacLatchy, vice-president: academic & provost. “She is well positioned to take on the challenges and to develop the opportunities to further support graduate program development at Laurier during her second term."

“I am delighted with the opportunity to continue to serve as dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies,” said Norris. “In the next few years, I will be working closely with members of the faculty to build capacity in our existing programs and to develop new programs that draw upon our strengths in ways that are innovative, collaborative and integrative."

In the Faculty of Social Work, Coady will take over the dean’s role from Susan Cadell, who has served as acting dean since January 2010. Cadell will be taking a sabbatical to focus on her research and graduate student supervision. Coady joined Laurier in 1994 as an associate professor, after working in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary for six years.

His social work practice background includes individual and family work with multi-problem adolescents and their families and group work with abusive men. Coady’s scholarship has focused mainly on the importance of the helping relationship to helping outcomes. He has served two terms as the associate dean of the Master of Social Work program and two terms as the associate dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

“Dr. Coady has been an active and engaged professor in the Faculty of Social Work,” said MacLatchy. “His leadership over the next five years will help guide the faculty as it undertakes exciting new opportunities regionally as well as nationally and internationally.”

“It is a privilege to have the opportunity to take a leadership role in our faculty,” said Coady. “I look forward to working collaboratively with a strong contingent of full-time faculty, contract academic staff, administrative staff, students, community partners, and alumni to build upon our past and current successes.”

Coady will begin his five-year term July 1, 2011. Norris will begin her second term in January 2012 following a research sabbatical. Tamas Dobozy, associate professor of English and Film Studies and associate dean of Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will serve as acting dean until the end of December.
