WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University’s Faculty of Music will welcome close to 200 singers from across southern Ontario Nov. 17 for a one-day vocal competition for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Ontario Chapter of Student Auditions.

Dan Lichti, associate professor of Voice, says the Faculty of Music is pleased to open its doors to Ontario singers and their teachers. Participants include students from Laurier, as well as students from York University, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, and the Glen Gould School of Music. Many of Laurier’s voice faculty and students will be involved in facilitating the event.

“This is an opportunity to re-connect with colleagues from other post-secondary institutions as well as with the many private teachers who work to develop and strengthen the love of singing,” says Lichti. “We are also proud to showcase Laurier's facilities and the singers who have chosen Laurier's Faculty of Music for their undergraduate studies."

The NATS Ontario Student Chapter Auditions are held at different universities across southern Ontario every year. Laurier hosted NATS competitions in 2008 and 2010.

“It's fantastic to be back at Wilfrid Laurier University this year,” says Michelyn Wright, NATS auditions coordinator. “It is a great central location, the renovations are beautiful, and it's a great experience for young singers to sing and hear performances in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall.”

Forty-three judges and 188 participants are involved in the competition. There are a variety of age categories, from 13 to 60, and experience levels, from beginners to mature singers. The final concert and awards ceremony will showcase the winners in each category.

Founded in 1944, NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world. The association has more than 7,300 members in the United States, Canada, and over 25 other countries.

The awards ceremony is Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall at Laurier’s Waterloo campus. It is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Michelyn Wright, NATS auditions coordinator, at michelyn@sympatico.ca or 905-472-6345.
