Laurier joins international network of top business schools

WATERLOO – Wilfrid Laurier University’s School of Business & Economics has joined the Global Business School Network (GBSN), a group of top international business schools focused on helping to address the lack of management leadership training in the developing world through programs, events and networking.
Laurier is the first Canadian university to join the 55-member network of business schools, whose members also include U.S. business schools from Columbia University, Northwestern University, Cornell University, the University of Virginia, Dartmouth University, and the University of Chicago, as well as the London Business School, INSEAD in France, ESADE Business School in Spain, and the National University of Singapore.
Hugh Munro, director of the MBA program at Laurier’s School of Business & Economics (SBE), said the decision to apply to become part of the GBSN was based in large part on the group’s values being aligned with those of SBE.
“There is a growing need for businesses and business schools around the world to take a much more balanced approach in how we make a difference,” he said. “We should look at how we add value to society and how we can help abroad.”
Munro, who recently attended the GBSN’s annual conference in Tunisia in North Africa, said this is also a prime opportunity for Laurier to connect with business schools around the world and partner in innovative programs and initiatives.
“This is a group that believes there is a lot to contribute, but also a lot to learn from partners in the developing world,” he said.
In terms of future GBSN projects, Munro said discussion at the annual conference centred on several key areas, including the role of innovation in leadership training, the need for more research, how to develop more educators, and finding new ways for business schools to make a difference. As for how Laurier students may become involved, Munro said he hopes to one day see an MBA field in sustainability that sees students here and in the developing world pair up to work on joint projects.
“This is about leaders making a difference,” he said. “There is a sense of hope about how we can help to do that with our colleagues in the developing world.”
