WATERLOO – A respected parish pastor and an experienced church leader has been appointed by the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary Board of Governors. Dr. Mark Harris has been appointed by the WLS Board of Governors to the position of Assistant Professor of Functional Theology and Director of Leadership In Ministry effective July 1, 2012.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Harris holds degrees from Pennsylvania State University, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and has a Doctor of Ministry degree from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. Dr. Harris has over thirty two years of pastoral ministry experience. He has served the congregations of Christ Lutheran Church in Peterborough, Ontario, Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Owen Sound, Ontario, and Mount. Zion Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Ontario. Since early 2008, Dr. Harris has been the Assistant to the Bishop of the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC), where his duties included overseeing the training and formation of candidates for ordained ministry. He has been an adjunct faculty member at WLS, teaching worship and Christian education as well as serving as Dean of the Keffer Chapel, overseeing the worship life of the Seminary community.

Dr. Harris has served on numerous boards and organizations. He was the founding chairperson of the Grey County Institute for Pastoral Care and for Lutherans Homes: Kitchener-Waterloo, the organization that runs Trinity Village long term care facility in Kitchener, Ontario. He has been a member of the ELCIC National Church Council, the ELCIC Committee on Faith, Order and Doctrine, the Council of General Synod of the Anglican Church on Canada, as well as the Evangelical Lutheran Foundation of Eastern Canada. Currently he is completing his term as President of Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR), an agency that works with Lutheran World Service addressing the needs of the Global South.

Dr. Harris will direct the Seminary’s Master of Divinity program which prepares students for congregational and chaplaincy ministries. As Director for Leadership in Ministry, he will be responsible for helping people identify their ministerial vocation, teaching courses in the ministerial arts (e.g. worship, preaching, education, etc), the WLS continuing education program, and working with post-graduate students in the Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Leadership.

“We are all excited at Dr. Harris’s decision to join the Seminary Community, “said Dr. David Pfrimmer the Principal Dean at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. “Dr. Harris has a very rich experience of the church and the world,” noted Pfrimmer, “together with his keen academic curiosity and his leadership skills, we will all learn a lot from him on how to minister more effectively in the midst of a dynamic and changing global context.”

The Board of Governors made this appointment at its March 23-24, 2012 meeting in Waterloo. “We are indeed excited about the skills and talents that Dr. Harris brings to this new position,” said Marge Watters Knebel, Chairperson of Waterloo Lutheran Seminary’s Board of Governors. “I know Dr. Harris will bring a new energy and excitement to his teaching at WLS. I am sure it will be just great for our students!”
