Graduate Students’ Association names Researcher of the Year
Communications, Public Affairs & Marketing
On Friday April 4, David Whiteside, a PhD management student, was named the Graduate Students' Association's (GSA) Researcher of the Year at the GSA's annual year-end banquet. Bharati Sethi, PhD student in social work, was named runner up.
Whiteside’s SSHRC-funded research focuses on identifying the factors that lead to unfair behaviour in the workplace. Specifically, his dissertation examines how and why ego depletion can cause managers to treat their employees unfairly in the workplace, even when they want to be fair, as well as how managers can overcome these depletion effects. Whiteside has been published in the Journal of Business Ethics and Research in Social Issues in Management and won the Best Master's Thesis Award from the Human Resources Research Institute (HRRI).
"I have now been a graduate student at Laurier for four and a half years, and during that time I have developed such a passion for uncovering the intricacies of fairness – and unfairness! – in the workplace, as well as research in general," said Whiteside. "It is just an honour to be recognized for doing what you love."
Sethi, from Mumbai, India, researches issues affecting immigrants/refugees in Canada, especially those residing in small and mid-sized urban-rural regions.
Whiteside and Sethi received cash prizes from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the GSA, and exclusive professional development packages coordinated by Laurier’s Research Office.
"All graduate students at Laurier can aspire to the level of excellence showcased in our program. David and Bharati are a celebration of the successes through research in our graduate student community," said Domenica De PasQuale, academic and research director, GSA. "My sincere congratulations go to them for being recognized by our community as leaders in research at Laurier."
The Researchers of Laurier program, an initiative of the GSA, showcases the innovative and high-quality research being undertaken at Laurier. Monthly winners are selected by a committee of their peers and their work is showcased across all Laurier campuses. The Researcher of the Year is selected from the Researcher of the Month winners. The winner and runner-up of the Researcher of the Year competition are selected by the entire graduate student membership.
