Biography
Dr. Amali Philips has a B.A. in Sociology (University of Sri Lanka), and M.A. (University of New Brunswick) and Ph.D. (University of Toronto) in Anthropology. Her graduate research was on marriage and dowry among middle-class Christians in Kerala, South India. Her subsequent research has been on the intersections of gender, ethnicity, class and caste among the tea plantation communities in Sri Lanka. Her publications focus on issues surrounding kinship and marriage, ethnicity, development, gender and law, and gender and citizenship. Her current research interests are in education and identity politics among the plantation communities in Sri Lanka; and gender, identity politics and multiculturalism among the Sri Lankan Tamil community in Canada.
