I started my studies in Russian history and language. Gradually my interests moved to the Russian Far East and then to political/cultural and social interactions between China and Russia. My first work in this area was on the establishment of the frontier between the two empires and the creation of a Russian mission in Manchu Beijing.
I learned Chinese and wrote my dissertation on the Russian railway concession city of Harbin (located in Northeastern China) and how over the 1920's the Chinese elite established Chinese control over Russian institutions and how the Chinese developed a minority policy to cope with their substantial Russian emigre population. I am now preparing it for publication.
Future work includes a monograph on the history of Special Districts from the Qing dynasty to the present, research on the city government movement in 1920's China, a history of the Chinese Eastern Railway and a study of Eurasian communities in China before the 1949 Revolution.
I teach courses on modern China and Japan, a survey course on modern Asian history, courses on the Vietnamese Wars, history of the Chinese diaspora, Chinese gender history, Chinese diplomatic history, WWII in Asia and a graduate course in the International Relations of the Far East.
