As a woman who has been doing research in natural sciences, and as a woman of colour who works with diverse stakeholders (e.g. researchers, funding agencies and academic and industry research partners), I hope to inspire graduate students and young researchers, especially women of colour, to become leaders in research or research administration.
I am inspired by the excellence, dedication and commitment of the Laurier researchers who work tirelessly on research that brings environmental and socio-economic benefits to Canadians and global citizens alike. I am also inspired by the collegial spirit in the Office of Research Services and broader Laurier community, who work to elevate Laurier’s reputation as a leader in research in Canada and elsewhere.
I lead at Laurier by providing careful, considered support to Laurier’s natural sciences and engineering researchers. With my assistance, researchers prepare and submit competitive research grant applications, and secure external funds to continue their ground-breaking research. Beyond my job responsibilities, I also take leadership in building community by social or volunteer initiatives. Last year, I volunteered to assist Laurier’s international students with filing their tax returns.
More than a workplace community, the Office of Research Services (ORS) has become part of my family in Canada. Excellent team spirit, a collaborative environment and a good sense of humour make the ORS so distinctive. The close-knit broader Laurier community also cultivates a sense of belonging and supportiveness.
As a research facilitator, I work everyday with young researchers (new faculty members, postdoctoral researchers and graduate and undergraduate students), ensuring their research interests and funding needs are supported. I am actively involved in mapping out their long-term research plans and identifying funding opportunities, research partners, and collaborators. This role allows me to demonstrate my passion and commitment towards research excellence and research administration, inspiring them to become leaders.
